Mithali Raj : When I say goodbye to cricket

Indian women’s ODI cricket team captain Mithali Raj said on Thursday that when she retires after the upcoming 50-over World Cup, the team will be far stronger with fresh talent. After the fifth ODI against New Zealand, Mithali said, “When I retire after this tournament, I will see that the team is much stronger with new talent to come.”

Stunning performances from Smriti Mandhana, Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur helped India beat New Zealand by six wickets in the fifth and final ODI at the John Davis Oval in Queenstown on Thursday. Mithali said, “We have improved in the last few matches. It is a good sign ahead of the World Cup. It was important to prepare well before the big tournament. Unfortunately we could not camp in India due to rising Omicron cases.”

she said, “The wicket looked batting friendly but the bowlers did well today. The thing we need to work on more is our fielding. Thanks to the New Zealand Cricket Board for giving us this opportunity”.

India saved themselves from a clean sweep after beating New Zealand by six wickets in the fifth and final ODI on Thursday thanks to scintillating half-centuries from Smriti Mandhana (71), Harmanpreet Kaur (63) and skipper Mithali Raj (57). New Zealand, however, won the series 4-1.
